How the Advocacy Process Works
1
Step 1: Submit an Advocacy Request
Families begin by completing a brief advocacy request form. This helps BYLP understand the student’s situation, concerns, and the type of support being requested.
Submitting a request does not guarantee services and is subject to staff capacity.
2
Step 2: Initial Review & Follow-Up
A BYLP team member reviews the request to determine whether advocacy support is appropriate and available.
If accepted, families may be contacted for:
Clarifying information
Documentation review
Next steps and timelines
3
Step 3: Advocacy Support & Preparation
When advocacy services are approved, BYLP may assist families by:
Helping prepare for school meetings
Reviewing policies, discipline notices, or IEP/504 documentation
Supporting families in understanding their options
Attending meetings alongside families when appropriate
BYLP works collaboratively with families and schools to support fair treatment and student well-being.

Step 4: Ongoing Support or Referral
Advocacy support may include:
One-time assistance
Short-term support
Referrals to additional resources or community partners
The level and duration of support depends on the situation, capacity, and student needs.
